Couples Therapy

Back on Track

Relationships are key to our health and well-being. Research shows that a positive relationship can do all sorts of magic from increasing our lifespan to helping us heal from disease quicker. But, if you’re reading this, your relationship might feel like it’s shortening your lifespan, not extending it. If you’re stuck in a pattern of fights and have lost the joy in your relationship, we can work together to get you back on the right track.

My approach to couples therapy is grounded in strong assessment and evidence-based treatment. Prior to becoming a psychologist, I was trained as a Marriage & Family Therapist and worked as a Relationship Educator for Pepperdine University. I’ve also written academic articles and conducted research on relationship flourishing. I use Gottman Method Couples Therapy, which helps reduce your activation and frequency of fights. Importantly, it also focuses on all the positives in a relationship, helping you to discover fun and intimacy again.

Gottman Method Couples Therapy

Gottman Method Couples Therapy is based on decades of research conducted by Dr. John Gottman in the Love Lab. The approach emphasizes psychoeducation and coaching of communication skills, meaning, and fondness and admiration. Dr. Owenz has completed Levels 1 & 2 Gottman Training.

Integrative Behavioral Couples Therapy

Integrative Behavioral Couples Therapy is an evidence-based approach, recommended by the Veteran’s Administration. Guided by a strong assessment phase, it is a third-wave cognitive-behavioral approach which balances change strategies with tolerance building. Dr. Owenz has completed IBCT Level 1 Training.

Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy

Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy emphasizes the attachment and emotional needs in the relationship. Through guided conversations, couples learn to express underlying emotions more openly and respond to each other with greater empathy and connection.
